Our very own project manager, Luke Power, features in C&IT magazine, reflecting on his year as a C&IT A-Lister.

C&IT is partnering with The Savoy, London and Malta Tourism Authority for the launch of The A List 2015. But what of last year's crop of budding events industry stars? Crown's Luke Power describes his last 12 months here:

I was really surprised to be invited to an interview and photo shoot for the C&IT A-List in April last year. At the time, I didn’t realise that I had even been nominated! I’d seen our Senior Logistics Manager, Amelia Conti, feature in the 2013 edition and really thought she deserved it, so felt quite honoured that Crown had put me forward.

Since the award, I’ve been privileged to work with clients both old and new, across sectors and in a range of events including conferences; exhibitions; experiential; communications, and even some team building. The highlight of the past six months has been working with three major motor clients, each with very different brand offerings.

Building relationships

The C&IT A-List is a great initiative that helps to foster and retain talent in our industry. The listing was the start of a string of networking opportunities with suppliers, venues and other industry employees, which has not only broadened my events knowledge and commercial awareness but produced some invaluable friendships.

It’s all too natural to ‘look someone up’ before meeting them and the A-List has been a real reinforcement to my somewhat lacklustre LinkedIn Profile. At home and abroad, the A-List has come up with surprising regularity and been a brilliant starting point for conversation and insight into the kind of person I am. It has certainly been a catalyst for the recruitment agencies, but I’m all too happy to let them know I’m not looking.

The road ahead

Professionally, I want to continue to develop the skills required to become a Producer, specifically acquiring more experience in content development and speaker management. I will continue to produce smaller projects including conferences, awards shows and individual aspects of larger jobs, whether exhibitions, experiential or other. I’ve had the chance to work with everyone in the company and value the faith and trust our account directors’ have placed in me to work with their clients.

In addition to supporting and developing my career, Crown offer rewards for outstanding work and prize longevity at the company with a two-month paid sabbatical after four years of service that I’m taking up this August and September. Whilst the industry has offered me the unique opportunity to travel, I have never taken an extended solo trip to visit places and experience cultures completely unknown to me - with just a backpack and my own plans, I hope to come back having learnt a thing or two. The self-designed trip will take me through Japan and China, where I hope to adapt to unusual environments, overcome language barriers and interact with local people as much as possible.

Industry recognition

The A-List is a chance to be recognised externally for your passion towards the industry, which so many reflect in their work but often otherwise goes unheard of. When I first joined the Crown, I had no concept of the size, variety and complexity of the events industry, which has only been translated through conversations with other events professionals and publications such as C&IT.

 My advice for this year’s nominees

  • Even if you’re pushed for time, don’t miss out on the nomination interview and photo shoot. It’s the only opportunity to meet your peers prior to the announcement and makes awards evening all the better
  • Smile for the camera
  • There’s a fantastic incentive trip to be enjoyed if you’re nominated…Thanks to Malta Tourism Authority.
